About the Web Designer

Freelance web design service for small businesses

Meet the Web Designer

Graduating in 1999 I was employed to self-train as a web designer before taking on webmaster roles in online gaming and insurance. Moving into front-end development and internet marketing for several years, I went freelance with my skill set in 2006.

If you're looking for a web designer near you or nationwide, then I can help avoid the expense and uncertainty of working with an agency or large company. I offer 23 years professional experience on a personal and friendly basis. Common website design questions are answered in my FAQ, but please contact me with any specific queries.

Steve Johnston BA (Hons)
Freelance Web Designer

Experience

In my hometown of Worcester, I began to design websites in 1999. I haven't stopped since, and while I now operate as a freelance website designer, it remains my full time job.

Personal Service

I pride myself on being approachable and friendly, working with clients on a one-to-one basis. Able to communicate about web technology at any level of knowledge, I'm always available to advise and support.

Competitive Price

Working on a fixed fee basis I offer a complete service, value for money and with no hidden extras. I produce work to a very high standard; the time and effort for which you are likely to pay a far higher agency fee.

Reliability

An estimated completion date is fixed at the start of any project, with all future queries and requests dealt with in the shortest possible time. This is my livelihood, so be assured that I won't disappear into the ether.

Website Design FAQ

Not at all. I regularly undertake web design projects for clients throughout the UK. All project planning can be dealt with via telephone and email. While there is no real need for any face to face meetings, I'm always available on Zoom or Skype.
This is nothing to be concerned about - you might be surprised how many people don't know where to start. I will advise you appropriately, discuss your options and explain any aspect you're not sure about. Together we will formulate the best possible plan based on your business needs and budget. I will work with you, and your involvement can as little or as much as you prefer.
A domain name is a website address (i.e. www.mysite.co.uk), which is registered and owned for any ongoing period of time. Website hosting is a place where all website files are stored, which is rented for a chosen period of time. Both services can be purchased and administered separately, but your domain name needs to be pointed to a hosting account for your website to be accessible at that address.
Absolutely. If you have a provider you would rather stay with, or if you would prefer to transfer a service away, or start again from scratch - I can provide all relevant assistance. There are no additional charges for administration tasks required to get you up and running with me.
I manually code and build in HTML and CSS, which gives maximum control and potential for non-complex websites and receiving simple payments. If you're looking to manage your own website content and/or a full ecommerce solution, then I can use a platform such as WordPress, WooCommerce, Wix or GoDaddy. Out-of-the-box applications and custom database development is also available.
Yes, no problem at all. I have plenty of experience in graphic design and desktop publishing, so producing logos and physical media is second nature. Also, as a qualified and published photographer I can produce original imagery or source relevant stock photos for clients.
I aim to give every website the chance of being discovered in Google search results as part of the design and build process. Organic search engine optimisation (SEO) and 'Local SEO' requires keyword analysis and research, well written copy and on-page techniques as minimum. Many other factors will increase the likelihood of SEO success, which can be discussed during an initial consultation.
With a non-complex website requiring only minimal and infrequent updates, I can undertake these for you. My annual hosting & support package would cover these at no additional cost, while any major changes would be quoted for. However, if you need to regularly edit your own content or administer an ecommerce website, then your website will be built on a platform utilising a content management system (CMS).
This will depend on your exact requirements. Some projects can take just a week or two, while others may take a few months. My workload at the time of enquiry and how long it takes to receive relevant information and content will also determine build time. In most cases I am able to supply an estimated completion date during initial discussion and planning.
If I manually build you a website, the code, pages, content and all associated files are 100% yours. A full copy of these can be provided upon completion or should you ever wish to change provider. Should anything ever happen to me, the website will be available from my files and/or the hosting provider. Any competent web professional in possession of the website will be able to take over with no issues.
The initial steps are to identify your website goals, define the scope of your project and agree a final costing. This is best accomplished via a no obligation, telephone conversation, or you can simply request a quote HERE and I will get back to you ASAP.
